Water Filtration Options: Choose the Right System

Explore Carbon, RO, UV & Softening Solutions

Overview of filtration technologies

Different types of water filters are designed to address different contaminants and household needs. Before choosing a filter, it's important to test your water to identify any harmful germs or chemicals. The CDC notes that most common pitcher or fridge filters use carbon to improve taste and remove heavy metals, but many do not remove germs. Reverse‑osmosis filters remove chemicals such as lead, copper, chromium and chloride and can reduce arsenic, fluoride, sulfate and other ions. The right system for your home depends on local water quality, household size, and the contaminants you want to address.

Types of filters and what they do

• Activated carbon filters – These filters absorb contaminants as water passes through porous carbon media. They are effective for improving taste and smell and removing chlorine, lead and other odor‑ or taste‑affecting compounds.

• Reverse osmosis systems – RO systems push water through a semipermeable membrane, trapping contaminants. They reduce heavy metals, fluoride and other impurities. RO filters remove chemicals such as lead, copper, chromium, chloride and sodium, and may also reduce arsenic, fluoride, radium, sulfate, calcium, magnesium, potassium, nitrate and phosphorous.

• Ultraviolet (UV) filters – UV systems neutralize 99.9% of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. They do not remove chemicals but are ideal for well water or boil‑water advisories when microbial disinfection is critical.

• Sediment pre‑filters – Sediment filters remove larger particles like silt and sand. They are used before carbon or RO systems to prevent clogging and extend filter life.

• Water softeners – Water softeners target minerals such as calcium and magnesium that cause hard water. They reduce limescale buildup and protect plumbing and appliances but do not remove other contaminants. Pairing a softener with a filtration system can improve both water taste and appliance longevity.

FAQs

1. Why should I test my water before choosing a filter? Testing identifies contaminants so you can select a filter that removes them. Taste and smell aren't reliable indicators of water safety.

2. Do all filters remove germs? No. Most common carbon filters do not remove germs. To remove pathogens, use a reverse‑osmosis system with an absolute pore size of 1 micron or smaller or a UV disinfection system.

3. What’s the difference between a filter and a softener? A softener only removes hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium. Filters such as carbon or RO remove a broader range of contaminants. Many homes benefit from both.

4. How often do filters need maintenance? Maintenance schedules vary by filter type. Whole‑house carbon filters typically need service every 12 months, while faucet filters may require replacement every few months; pitcher filters may need monthly changes. Follow manufacturer recommendations to keep your system effective.
